Carlton Ware “Rouge Royale” Tri-Lobed Art Deco Bowl, England, Circa 1930s
An exceptional and architecturally striking Carlton Ware “Rouge Royale” tri-lobed bowl, produced in Stoke-on-Trent, England during the height of the Art Deco period.
This sculptural three-point form represents one of the more visually dramatic expressions of Carlton Ware’s celebrated Rouge Royale glaze. The surface displays a saturated oxblood center that deepens into plum, aubergine, and near-black pooling at the contours — a tonal gradient achieved through complex high-temperature firing. The interior triangular division creates strong geometric tension, unmistakably Art Deco in character.
The gilt rim frames the composition with restrained luminosity, balancing the intensity of the glaze. Rouge Royale pieces were notoriously difficult to fire evenly, and forms of this complexity were produced in smaller quantities compared to standard circular bowls.
The result is both functional and display-driven — a true crossover between British art pottery and decorative design object.
Attribution & Period
Maker: Carlton Ware (Wiltshaw & Robinson)
Origin: Stoke-on-Trent, England
Mark: Carlton Ware “Made in England” script mark with factory numbers (as photographed)
Date: Circa 1930s (Pre–World War II production)
Mark style and glaze characteristics align with documented pre-war Rouge Royale output.
Dimensions & Weight
(Provide exact measurements if available; approximate scale appears medium cabinet size.)
Tri-lobed sculptural form with three defined interior sections.
Condition
• Fine, stable glaze crazing consistent with age and typical of Rouge Royale
• No chips
• No cracks
• No hairlines
• No restoration observed
• Gilt remains intact and bright
Crazing is confined to the glaze layer only and does not affect structural integrity. Surface saturation remains strong with no dulling.
Authenticity & Construction
Mold-formed earthenware body, kiln-fired.
Rouge Royale high-gloss glaze applied and fired to produce oxblood depth and edge pooling.
Hand-applied gilt rim refired for permanence.
Construction and glaze depth are consistent with documented Carlton Ware Art Deco production of the 1930s.
Provenance
Acquired from private estates and longstanding collections in North America.
Placement
Superb as a standalone cabinet object, console focal point, or integrated within a curated Art Deco ceramic grouping. The geometric form reads particularly strong against stone, lacquer, brass, or dark wood environments.
STANDARD ATTRIBUTION & VALUE DISCLOSURE
This piece is described to the best of current scholarly and market knowledge. Any maker or regional attribution is based on visual analysis, materials, construction techniques, and documented stylistic comparisons. As with many vintage and antique ceramic objects, definitive attribution may not be possible without original factory records. Pricing reflects condition, quality, decorative appeal, and current collector demand rather than a guaranteed maker identification.
