Choisy-le-Roi Attributed Faience Candlesticks, Pair Choisy-le-Roi Attributed Faience Candlesticks, Pair

Choisy-le-Roi Attributed Faience Candlesticks, Pair
US$900.00

Pair of late 19th-century French faience candlesticks, executed in a commanding cobalt blue, ivory-white, and warm ochre palette with finely painted foliate banding and disciplined border work. The forms are architectural and confident, with flared circular bases, elongated shafts, and restrained upper collars that give them strong vertical presence.

Both examples carry a hand-painted underglaze blue mark reading “Choisy … Poterie” within an oval cartouche. The script and format strongly indicate production associated with Choisy-le-Roi, one of the most significant French faience centers of the 19th century. Given the hand-rendered nature of the mark, the pair is conservatively offered as Choisy-le-Roi attributed rather than factory-line certified without in-hand archival confirmation.

Attribution & Period

The decoration reflects traditional northern French tin-glazed earthenware practice: opaque white ground, hand-painted cobalt floral reserves, ochre accent banding, and rhythmic geometric borders. The glaze displays the soft depth and subtle surface variation characteristic of period faience firing.

Estimated late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1880–1910, based on glaze quality, decorative vocabulary, and hand-painted mark style.

Dimensions & Weight

  • Taller example : 12 in (30 cm)

  • Shorter example: 9–9.5 in (22–23 cm)

The intentional variation in height aligns with period decorative pairings rather than later machine-matched production. Glossy glaze with age-appropriate wear consistent with antique faience.

Condition

No major structural cracks observed in photographs. Expected minor edge wear consistent with handling over time. Please review images closely.

Authenticity & Construction

These candlesticks are antique French tin-glazed earthenware produced in the Choisy-le-Roi tradition. They are not later decorative reproductions. Visible surface variation, painterly brushstroke nuance, and glaze pooling are inherent to hand-painted faience manufacture and support period production. Minor kiln and production irregularities visible at the base mark areas, including glaze pooling.

Placement

A commanding mantel or cabinet pair with strong French provincial authority. Particularly effective layered into traditional European interiors, curated blue-and-white collections, or maximalist antique displays.

Hand-Painted Portuguese Blue & White Vase, Mid-20th Century Hand-Painted Portuguese Blue & White Vase, Mid-20th Century
Quick View
Hand-Painted Portuguese Blue & White Vase, Mid-20th Century
US$325.00

A refined hand-painted blue and white ceramic vase produced in Portugal, featuring a clean cylindrical form decorated with stylized floral motifs rendered in rich cobalt glaze. The design balances traditional Iberian blue-and-white pottery with a restrained, modern sensibility characteristic of mid-20th-century Portuguese decorative arts. The decoration is executed entirely by hand, with visible brush variation and soft tonal transitions within the cobalt, rather than flat or mechanical application. The crisp white ground provides strong contrast, allowing the saturated blue motifs to read clearly and rhythmically around the body. A solid cobalt band at the rim and base visually anchors the composition.

Attribution & Period

The underside bears a hand-painted maker’s mark reading “

  • ”Vinha do Castelo” …

  • “Hand Painted” …

  • ‘Made in Portugal””,
along with pattern numbers and the notation “”For Kheila,”” indicating export production for an external retailer or distributor. This type of marking is consistent with Portuguese studio and workshop production intended for the international market during the mid-20th century. Period Mid-20th Century (circa 1940s–1960s)

Studio Stoneware Bowl with Cobalt Gradient Glaze, Signed Base Studio Stoneware Bowl with Cobalt Gradient Glaze, Signed Base
Quick View
Studio Stoneware Bowl with Cobalt Gradient Glaze, Signed Base
US$449.00

A substantial hand-thrown studio pottery bowl with a wide, gently flared form and classic wheel-thrown rings visible inside—an immediate sign of studio production rather than factory ware.

The glaze is a cool, misty blue with deeper cobalt pooling at the rim, showing natural variation from the firing and the potters application. The exterior has a stoneware body with subtle speckling and a warm, exposed foot ring typical of wheel-thrown work.

Authenticity & Construction

Signature / mark (important for collectors) The underside shows an incised leaf (maple-like) motif as the maker’s mark. This is a true “signature” style mark (cut into the clay before firing), consistent with studio potters who used personal chops or carved symbols rather than printed stamps. Likely material & technique • Hand-thrown stoneware (wheel-thrown; visible throwing lines) • Glazed interior with a darker brushed/pooled rim band • Unglazed foot ring with kiln-fired clay tone

Attribution & Period

Possible origin & dating (best-supported, without overclaiming) Based on the studio-pottery form, incised emblem mark, and blue glaze aesthetic, this bowl fits well with North American studio pottery trends that were especially popular from the mid-20th century into the late 20th century (c. 1960s–1990s).

The carved leaf mark strongly suggests a potter working in a region where a leaf emblem would be meaningful (often seen with Canadian or North American makers), but without a readable name stamp, the exact maker and town can’t be stated with certainty.

Dimensions & Weight

  • Height: 5 1/4 in •

  • Mouth diameter: 12 in •

  • Base diameter: 4 1/2 in

Condition

Appears very good vintage condition from photos: no obvious cracks or repairs seen. Minor surface speckling/marks consistent with normal studio kiln firing and age. “No chips, no hairlines, no repairs”

Placement

Why collectors want it • Large, display-worthy scale (12” mouth) • Sculptural modern form suitable for MCM / minimalist interiors • Artist mark (incised emblem) + handmade character from wheel-throwing and glaze variation
