Canadian Studio Pottery Handled Vessel, Turquoise Drip Glaze

US$425.00

This wheel-thrown stoneware vessel presents a commanding sculptural presence through its robust, low-casserole form and twin pulled lug handles. The piece is defined by a luminous turquoise sea-green glaze that exhibits a dramatic drip cadence, pooling with tonal depth over an iron-rich, speckled body. The surface architecture is celebrated for its intentional kiln-born characteristics—ash-like speckling and "freckling"—which provide a rhythmic, organic texture that interacts dynamically with ambient light. This is an elevated example of studio craft, where functional utility is secondary to its compelling material presence.

Attribution & Period Consistent with Canadian Studio Tradition1970s The form, glaze chemistry, and handle construction are wholly consistent with the British Columbia and Ontario studio pottery movements of the 1970s. The incised "H" initial on the base reflects the mark of an individual studio potter rather than a commercial factory. The use of a vibrant turquoise drip over a toasted stoneware body is a documented stylistic hallmark of Canadian workshops operating in the mid-to-late 20th century, drawing from Leach-Hamada functionalist traditions.

Dimensions & Weight

Height: 4 inches Width / Diameter: 8 inches (Rim) Depth / Base Diameter: 7.5 inches (approx.) Weight: 2.8 lbs

Condition Excellent collector condition. The stoneware body is structurally sound with no observed cracks or restorations. The glaze remains vibrant with high gloss; all surface irregularities, including kiln specks and glaze pooling, are inherent to the artisan firing process and confirm its studio origin. Light shelf wear is present on the unglazed foot rim.

Authenticity & Construction A masterfully wheel-thrown object with visible concentric turning rings and a hand-trimmed foot. The lug handles were hand-pulled and applied at the leather-hard stage, showing the subtle asymmetry prized by collectors of unique studio works. The multi-tonal glaze movement suggests a high-fire reduction environment, which creates the deep "bleeding" of the turquoise into the iron-bearing clay.

Placement An ideal centerpiece for a brutalist or mid-century modern interior. Its low, wide profile makes it an exceptional vessel for organic displays, while its rich color saturation allows it to hold its own against stone, wood, or concrete surfaces in a contemporary architectural setting.

STANDARD ATTRIBUTION & VALUE DISCLOSURE This piece is described to the best of current scholarly and market knowledge. Any maker or regional attribution is based on visual analysis, materials, construction techniques, and documented stylistic comparisons. As with many MCM and antique design objects, definitive attribution may not be possible without original labels or factory records. Pricing reflects condition, quality, decorative appeal, and current collector demand rather than guaranteed maker identification.
