Mid-Century Modern Studio Pottery Bowl, Blue Glaze

US$245.00

This is an authentic mid-century modern studio pottery bowl, dating to approximately 1955–1968, distinguished by its restrained modernist form and expressive kiln-fired glaze. The bowl features a deep cobalt-to-ink blue interior glaze with fine granular texture and natural pooling at the well—hallmarks of mid-century reduction or semi-reduction firing. The exterior is left in a matte charcoal/iron-rich stoneware, creating a deliberate contrast between surface and interior. A warm exposed terracotta rim and foot ring frame the piece, a design choice strongly associated with post-war studio ceramics emphasizing honesty of materials.

Attribution & Period

Stylistic & Historical Context The form, glaze restraint, and exposed clay are consistent with mid-century studio pottery traditions influenced by Bauhaus functionalism and Japanese mingei philosophy. Comparable work emerged from European (French, German, Scandinavian) and North American studio potters during the post-war period, particularly those working outside factory production.

The absence of a maker’s mark is not unusual for studio bowls of this era, especially those produced for design shops, galleries, or small ateliers rather than mass export.

Placement

This piece reads as decorative modernism rather than tableware—intended as a fruit bowl, centerpiece, or display object in a curated interior. MCM Collectable Valuable for This Piece Period-correct mid-century modern palette (blue, terracotta, charcoal)

Studio-made, not factory production Strong sculptural profile with excellent proportions Honest materials and visible firing character Highly versatile for interior styling or collection display

Condition:

Very good condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs Light surface wear consistent with age and careful use Glaze and foot ring remain structurally sound Please review photos for surface character; all marks shown are age-consistent.

Dimensions & Weight

  • Diameter:12 inches

  • Height: . 2 inches

Authenticity & Construction

Unsigned mid-century studio pottery bowls routinely sell in this bracket when the form and glaze are strong. The colorway and rim treatment are especially appealing to MCM interior designers, not just ceramic collectors. This is not common tourist pottery—the restraint and glaze quality place it above casual vintage ceramics.

STANDARD ATTRIBUTION & VALUE DISCLOSURE; This piece is described to the best of current scholarly and market knowledge. Any maker or regional attribution is based on visual analysis, materials, construction techniques, and documented stylistic comparisons. As with many vintage and antique glass objects, definitive attribution may not be possible without original labels or factory records. Pricing reflects condition, quality, decorative appeal, and current collector demand rather than a guaranteed maker identification.
