Signed Studio Cobalt Stoneware Tureen, BR Monogram
Handmade studio pottery lidded tureen, wheel-thrown and finished in a saturated cobalt-to-indigo glaze with expressive cratered “eye” motifs encircling the body. The surface shows intentional pooling, tonal variation, and edge breaks—hallmarks of high-fired studio stoneware and individual kiln atmosphere. The form is confidently modernist: a rounded, architectural body anchored by bold applied loop handles and crowned with a sculptural ring finial. The lid sits within a recessed gallery for a secure, functional fit. The unglazed foot ring and visible clay body confirm true studio production rather than factory manufacture.
Attribution & Period
The rhythmic circular “eye” decoration reads as layered glaze or resist work, producing dimensional contrast against the deep cobalt ground. Under shifting light, the glaze reveals movement and depth—an effect prized among collectors of late-20th-century studio ceramics. Signed to the base with a hand-painted “BR” monogram (see close-up image). Maker currently unidentified; offered as signed studio pottery. Attribution based on construction, glaze program, and hand-finished details. High-fired glazed stoneware. Wheel-thrown body with hand-applied loop handles and ring finial. Fitted lid with recessed seat. Unglazed foot ring typical of studio firing.
Dimensions & Weight
Height: 5 3/4 in
Width (handle to handle): 7 in
Body diameter: 5 in
Condition
Very good studio condition. No structural cracks or repairs observed. Expected kiln variation, glaze pooling, speckling, and minor hand-formed irregularities inherent to authentic studio pottery. Please review all images closely.
Authenticity & Construction
This is authentic handmade studio stoneware, individually thrown and decorated. It is not mass-produced ceramics or contemporary decorative ware. Surface variation and asymmetry are integral to its one-of-one studio character.
Placement
A sculptural yet functional vessel that anchors a studio pottery collection, layering seamlessly into Scandinavian-modern, wabi-sabi, and curated 1970s–1990s interiors. Equally compelling as a serving piece or standalone display object.
STANDARD ATTRIBUTION & VALUE DISCLOSURE; This piece is described to the best of current scholarly and market knowledge. Any maker or regional attribution is based on visual analysis, materials, construction techniques, and documented stylistic comparisons. As with many vintage and antique glass objects, definitive attribution may not be possible without original labels or factory records. Pricing reflects condition, quality, decorative appeal, and current collector demand rather than a guaranteed maker identification.
