Langley Lidded Stoneware Soup Service - Honey Amber Glaze, c. 1960s
English lidded stoneware soup cups (handled crocks), circa 1960s service for three each retaining its original fitted lid and executed in a warm honey-amber glaze with concentric banded detailing. The forms are compact, architectural, and distinctly modernist—utility elevated through proportion and material integrity.
Authenticity & Construction
The glaze presents a rich tonal depth, pooling subtly within the horizontal ribbing and across the gently domed lids. The speckled stoneware body and satin-gloss surface are characteristic of high-fired English domestic ceramics of the 1960s–1970s, when functional tableware was produced with restrained design intelligence and enduring craftsmanship.
One example is clearly stamped “MADE IN ENGLAND” beneath a stylized maker’s mark (shown), confirming English origin, Langley, by Denby. The construction, glaze program, and banded profile is an example of English studio-utility production of the period.
Complete sets with original lids are increasingly difficult to source intact. This grouping presents cohesively and reads as sculptural when displayed together—equally compelling for service or for styled shelf placement.
Attribution & Period
England, circa 1960s–1970s.
Condition
Excellent condition consistent with age. No structural cracks or repairs observed. Minor surface wear appropriate to use and period (see photographs). Lids fit securely
Dimensions & Weight
Height (to top of lid): 4 in
Overall width including handle: 8 in
