Murano Sommerso Swan Lovers Glass Sculpture, c.1970
A sculptural mid-century art glass composition depicting two swans forming a perfect heart silhouette. The elongated necks meet in a poised gesture of symmetry, creating an architectural negative space that reads equally as sculpture and decorative art object. The bodies transition from soft opalescent white to saturated cobalt blue through classic sommerso-style coloration, while the heads terminate in fiery ruby red accents that provide dramatic contrast.
The swans rest on an elaborate clear glass base composed of fluid scroll-like forms that resemble water or foliage, giving the piece a sense of upward movement and balance. When viewed from multiple angles, the sculpture reveals layered glass transitions, internal color pooling, and controlled hand-formed shaping typical of studio art glass traditions associated with Murano production of the mid to late twentieth century.
While unsigned examples are common in export decorative art glass from Italy and other European studios, the color layering, stylized swan anatomy, and heart composition are strongly reminiscent of Murano tourist and decorative sculptures produced from the 1960s through the 1980s. The ruby and amber-tinted head details suggest applied glass elements fused while still molten, a technique frequently seen in Venetian glass studios producing romantic figurative compositions.
This piece reads visually closer to a small sculpture than a simple decorative object and performs exceptionally well as a focal point on a console, pedestal, or illuminated display shelf.
Attribution & Period
Murano style art glass sculpture; Italy, circa 1965–1975; Unsigned but consistent with Venetian decorative export glass produced for the international market during the mid-century period.
Dimensions & Weight
Height: 8.5 in (21.6 cm)
Width: 6.25 in (15.9 cm)
Base Diameter: 3 in (7.6 cm)
Weight: 1.992 lbs
Condition
Very good vintage condition. Glass remains structurally excellent with no visible cracks. Minor base wear and light surface marks consistent with age and display use. The underside of the base shows typical shelf wear from decades of placement. No structural damage observed.
Authenticity & Construction
Hand-blown and hand-shaped art glass sculpture. The color gradient in the swan bodies appears achieved through controlled layered glass techniques similar to sommerso coloration, where colored glass is encased within clear or translucent layers. The heads display applied colored glass details fused during the hot forming stage. The sculpture’s base and figures appear formed from multiple hot-worked elements joined while molten, creating the flowing organic base and stable pedestal.
Placement
Optimally positioned as a console sculpture, pedestal display, or as a romantic focal point within a bedroom or living room, this piece achieves its full potential in a modern interior or glass cabinet where directional lighting activates the internal blue color pool and vibrant ruby highlights.
Provenance
Private decorative arts collection; Acquired from secondary art market
STANDARD ATTRIBUTION & VALUE DISCLOSURE; This piece is described to the best of current scholarly and market knowledge. Any maker or regional attribution is based on visual analysis, materials, construction techniques, and documented stylistic comparisons.
