Venetian Pink Cased Crystal Underplate, Italy c.1965
A luminous Venetian cased crystal underplate executed in saturated fuchsia-pink over clear crystal, centered with a precision-cut radial starburst and encircled by alternating oval lenses and zig-zag banding. The composition reflects mid-century Murano-region decorative production, where bold color saturation met architectural cutting for dramatic tabletop presentation.
The vibrant pink perimeter frames the crystalline interior, creating strong optical contrast and refraction. When styled beneath the coordinating pedestal vessel (shown separately), the pairing forms a cohesive Italian modern vignette consistent with 1960s luxury entertaining aesthetics.
Attribution & Period
Italy (Murano), circa 1965. exhibiting construction, coloration, and cutting consistent with mid-century Venetian glasshouse production for export, with attribution remaining at the regional level in the absence of factory documentation.
Dimensions & Weight
Diameter: 4 inches
Height: 1.25 inches
Base Diameter: 3.5 inches
Weight: 3.856 lbs
The substantial weight relative to scale supports crystal-grade composition rather than standard pressed glass.
Condition
Excellent condition overall; fine, hair-like annealing lines (“haylines”) are visible within the clear crystal base under magnification and raking light. These are stable internal cooling lines characteristic of thicker mid-century glass production and are not cracks. There is very minor wear to the pink perimeter in one small area, consistent with age and careful prior use. No chips, fractures, or structural concerns observed.
Authenticity & Construction
Thick cased crystal, precision-cut with starburst and lens motifs and finished with machine-assisted decorative cutting and a ground, polished base; the clarity, refraction, and cutting depth confirm crystal construction, with a rich pink casing over clear crystal producing pronounced depth and tonal intensity.
Placement
Ideal as a sculptural underplate beneath a Murano centerpiece, or displayed independently as a jewel-toned accent on marble, lacquer, or glass surfaces. Particularly compelling when paired with the coordinating Venetian vessel for a curated 1960s Italian presentation.
STANDARD ATTRIBUTION & VALUE DISCLOSURE; This piece is described to the best of current scholarly and market knowledge. Any maker or regional attribution is based on visual analysis, materials, construction techniques, and documented stylistic comparisons. As with many vintage and antique glass objects, definitive attribution may not be possible without original labels or factory records. Pricing reflects condition, quality, decorative appeal, and current collector demand rather than a guaranteed maker identification.
